God’s Faithfulness
Author: Olivia Woods

“Cornerstone” has two meanings according to Oxford Languages. It is a stone that forms the base of a building, joining two walls, or it is an important quality that a particular thing depends on or is based upon. Either way, the cornerstone is the basis for a sturdy foundation. Peter lays out a picture of God’s faithfulness to us through Jesus Christ as our cornerstone in 1 Peter 2 - the cornerstone that has been promised to us throughout generations.

“As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

Peter seems to address both definitions within this passage, both encompassing Jesus as the basis of our faith and salvation. Peter addresses believers as living stones being used to construct a spiritual house. He uses “spiritual” to define not a physical building, but a temple that is made up of the Christian body. And within this spiritual house, there has to be a cornerstone upon which faith rests: that is Jesus.

God’s faithfulness is alluded to through this passage and revealed to us in Genesis 3 after the fall of man, the first foretelling of the Gospel of Jesus.

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel”

This announcement about the future descendant that would deal with the serpent is Jesus Christ fulfilling the prophecy. God lays out His faithfulness by promising, that although sin has entered the world, the Savior would strike down the Enemy and allow us to dwell in the house of the Lord. God is faithful in providing Jesus as that Savior that proved to be a cornerstone of our salvation.

I now want to circle back around to the first and second verses of 1 Peter 2. We all have wants and desires. It is human nature to want to have these desires fulfilled. Being that we have established that the Lord is indeed gracious, faithful and all things good, the desire of our heart must be sincere. This sincere milk discussed in the second verse refers to that of the Gospel, which feeds us and nourishes us to grow in our faith - to provide a strong foundation that is only built on Jesus alone: our cornerstone.

Reflection:

  • Are you faithful to give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and faithfulness? Do you adamantly thank Him for the gift of the Gospel?
  • Are you feeding your desires with the “sincere milk” of the Word?
  • Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your firm foundation that is found in Jesus. Thank you for sending Your Son to die for our salvation. I pray that when we feel like there is no hope that we would turn to the Word and allow You to remind us that You are faithful in Your promises.

Family Application: I can praise God!
Author: Cooper Herrington

  • Today we get to read from the book of 1 Peter. 1 Peter was written by, you guessed it, Peter. Peter was writing this to the Church. The Church was going through a hard time. Peter wanted the Church to remember that God was still with them even though things were really hard for them.
  • When we read the verse from today, it tells us that we are God’s special possession. We are His special possession so we can praise God. Praising God is telling Him thank you or telling Him how great He is. What is something you can praise God for today?
  • Today, find time to do something that you love to do. Maybe God made you with a love of singing, dancing, throwing a baseball, kicking a soccer ball, baking a delicious treat, or planting a beautiful garden. All of us are different and all of us love doing different things. Do something that you love to do and praise God while you do it.
  • Prayer: God, You are so special! Thank You for choosing me and loving me. I love You, God. Amen.
