Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.

This week, as we talk about love, we would be remiss if we didn’t look to Jesus’ ministry and His relationship with His disciples as an example of love. In John 13, as Jesus’ time on earth quickly drew closer, He intentionally spent His last moments with His close circle of followers. John 13:1 says, “Having loved those who were His in the world, He loved them until the end.” This doesn’t mean just until His death, but it also tells of the fullest extent to which He loved them. Here, Jesus gave an example of love through quality time with His disciples and an act of service.  

He washed the feet of His twelve disciples, including His betrayer, Judas, to show the humble act of love through service. Jesus didn’t just say it – He showed it. Peter had a hard time accepting this act of love, and Judas was about to betray the One who demonstrated love toward him. Jesus served those who didn’t think themselves worthy and those who would turn their back on Him. Jesus’ love wasn’t based on merit or worthiness of the man; Jesus loved because that was what His Father did. God loved us before we heard and received His gift of salvation, before we were born, and before the world was created! We did nothing to deserve His love, but He loved us first anyway! 

Jesus didn’t stop at showing love. He gave them a new command - a new way to love. John 13:34-35 says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Jesus’ command is not just “love your neighbor as yourself” but “love others as Jesus loved you.” He put actions behind His words. He served others selflessly. 

So how do we love like Jesus? How do we love selflessly? It is not by our power but by the power the Holy Spirit has given us.

• Do you enjoy spending quality time with people or do you prefer frequent but quick conversations?
• Think of ways that you can intentionally stop and engage with the people you come in contact with every day.
• Ask the Lord to help you love like Him this week so that others can feel the love of Jesus.
