Leaning on God

Author: Amy Stampley
Jan 3, 2025 | Psalms 9

Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.

Life can often feel so unfair.  We see so much injustice in the world.  We experience personal hurt and yet evil seems to prosper.  Psalm 9 reminds us that God is a righteous God.

Psalm 9 is a Song of Thanksgiving.  Through this 9th chapter of Psalm, we are reminded that gratitude shifts our focus from our problems to God’s greatness. When we reflect on God’s past faithfulness, it gives us confidence to trust that He will do it again.

His reign is eternal and a safe haven for all who trust in Him - even bringing about peace in the midst of trouble.

One of the most difficult things that I face as a Christian is that so often, I may not know the reason that certain things happen.  God’s vindication will come, however, in His time not necessarily in mine.

Even when in distress, David’s focus remains on glorifying God.

David begins and ends Psalm 9 by giving all praise to God. When we shift our minds from the problem to God’s infinite power, it helps us to change our perspective.

What can you praise God for today, even in the midst of suffering?

Write out a prayer asking God to give you refuge in a specific area of your life where you feel stressed or overwhelmed. Trust in Him to help you and to give you peace over it.

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
  • Use the S.O.A.P. Method to study God’s Word.
  • SCRIPTURE: What stands out to you in today’s passage?
  • OBSERVATION: What is this text saying? What is the context? How does it fit with the verses before and after it? Are there any commands, instructions, or promises?
  • APPLICATION: How can you apply this verse to your life? What does this mean today? What is God saying to you?
  • PRAYER: Respond to the passage in prayer. Ask God to help you apply this truth to your life and spend some time listening to what He may be telling you.
  • Prayer: Dear God, we are so grateful for every good and perfect gift that You have given to us.  When our worries seem so big, help us realize that You are so much bigger.  Dear God, even when things are happening, You are working those things out for what is best for us.  Even when life is hard, God, let us glorify the majesty of You.  You are such a good, good Father. Amen.
