The One

Author: Blake Houston
Dec 5, 2023 | Revelation 4

Begin with 2 minutes of silence and stillness before God.

Very few chapters in Scripture give us a look at what it’s like to be in the presence of God. Revelation 4 is one of those chapters. So today, our devotional is simple. Settle in, find a quiet place, and let’s take a moment to simply take in the glory of our Lord through His Word:

John sets the scene. It’s a throne room that’s saturated with splendor. There’s a throne in the center with the One seated on it.

This One is so majestic, so powerful, so great, that John struggles to find manmade words to describe Him. He tries his best, though, and asks us to picture it with him: gemstones, a rainbow that encircles the Throne, flashes of lightning and peals of thunder.

This is no ordinary King.

This is the Ancient of Days, the Almighty, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

He sits enthroned forever, with the twenty-four elders and four beasts with eyes constantly beholding the Glory giving praise to Him continually and eternally.

Don’t rush away from this vision today. Take a moment, in the midst of your hustle and bustle, to let the magnitude of God’s glory sink in. Let it change you. Let it bring you to a response.

And as we behold the One on His throne, we have but one thing to offer: Praise.

Holy, holy, holy

Is the Lord God Almighty

Who Was, and Is, and Is to Come

You are worthy, our Lord and God

To receive Glory and Honor and Power

For You created all things

And by Your will they were created

And have their being

And all the people said… Amen.

Take 2 minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
  • How does this vision of the throne room of God shape your perception of His glory & power?
  • In what ways can you reflect the reality of God’s majesty in your day-to-day life?
  • Take a moment to identify something in your life that you can lay down before His throne, trusting in His sovereign power.
  • Prayer: Father, as I reflect on the glory revealed in Your throne room, I’m reminded of Your unmatched power and goodness. Renew my heart & my worship for You. Help me to live in a way that honors Your Majesty & connects others to Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Family Devo: Revelation 4

Head

As I read Revelations 4, I am amazed, confused, and excited all at the same time. It’s important to know that we don’t have to understand everything in the Bible. The most important thing to understand is that God loves us a TON and that He WINS! Beyond that, Revelations helps us to begin to picture what Heaven will be like and form a picture of God in our minds. We, however, know that anything we can imagine is just a slight glimpse of how amazing and beautiful Heaven really is. Revelation 4 tells us about God sitting on a throne with a rainbow surrounding it. There are so many other visions in Revelation 4, but this is one I can relate to and picture in my mind. God initially sent the rainbow in Genesis as a reminder that He always keeps His promises. I love how that image appears again here as His promises are being fulfilled in Heaven. The text goes on to explain how the creatures and the elders fell down in front of the throne and worshiped the Lord. The most amazing part of Heaven is that we get to live forever in the direct presence of the Lord and worship Him face to face. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Heart

Get a blank piece of paper and draw a picture of what you think Heaven and the throne of God look like based on what you’ve learned from Revelation 4.

Hands

Heaven is an amazing place simply because we get to live forever in the presence of the Lord. I hope that you, your friends, your classmates, your family, and people in our community will all join together in Heaven one day. It is our job as God’s children to share His Word and tell people about Him. Tell somebody how much God loves them today so we can make Heaven crowded!

Prayer: Lord, I don’t know exactly what Heaven is going to be like, but it sounds amazing! I want to live in Your presence forever, and I want everybody I know to join me in Heaven. Give me the strength and desire to tell other people about You every day. Amen.
