Tis' so Sweet to Trust in Jesus

Author: Brooke Warren
Jan 1, 2024 | Psalm 145:14-21

Begin with 2 minutes of silence and stillness before God.

“‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His word. Just to rest upon His promise. Just to know, ‘thus saith the Lord.’ Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him. How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er.  Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus; oh for grace to trust Him more. I’m so glad I learned to trust Him. Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend. And I know that He is with me, will be with me to the end.”

First off - Happy New Year! I’m so excited to start this new year off with you!

I love this sweet hymn above that reminds me of God’s goodness and faithfulness.  I often find myself singing it as I sit in my daughter’s room rocking her to sleep and reflecting on the precious life God has given me; and how He has been so faithful in both the highs and lows of life.

Today’s passage is all about God’s faithfulness and how we can trust Him to meet our every need.  Let’s look at this passage verse by verse and the promise in each one.

We can trust God to:

  • Bear our burdens and lift us up from low places (verse 14).
  • Provide for our needs specifically - what we need, when we need it (verses 15-16)
  • Be righteous and loving toward us, His creation (verse 17)
  • Be near to us always (verse 18)
  • Fulfill our desires (as they are aligned with His) and to hear and save us when we cry out to Him (verse 19)
  • Watch over us as we love and follow Him (verse 20)

This pretty well covers every major area of our lives, and while some of these may seem obvious, they can be easy to overlook or doubt when we find ourselves in a difficult time.  How sweet it is to know that we are loved by a God who cares about us and is faithful in our every need.

As a person who loves to be able to control situations, I often get anxiety when I have to turn over control to others - because what if they don’t do things like I would (because surely my way has to be the right one!)? But let me tell you, the peace and rest that I find in trusting God to control my life and the situations that arise, knowing that He will handle every part of it far better than I ever could is so freeing and brings such relief. As I am learning, ever so slowly, to release control of my life to God, I am finding that anxiety has less control over me.

If we believe all of the promises above, then even when we face difficulties and hard seasons, we can trust that God is still good and is still faithful. Circumstances may change, but God absolutely will not.  If we believe He is trustworthy today, then we can believe He is trustworthy tomorrow - even if tomorrow doesn’t look like we hoped.

Because we can trust His promises in the verses above, our response is to praise Him (verse 21).  So, as we start this new year, not knowing what it will bring, one of our best resolutions is to set our hearts on trusting God every single day and to praise Him - no matter what - for all that He has already done and all that He will do. ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus.

Take 2 minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflections:
  • What areas of your life do you need to trust God more with?
  • Reflect on all the ways that God has been faithful to you in the past.
  • Spend some time meditating on the words of “‘Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus” at the top.  How do they speak to you about God’s faithfulness to help you trust Him more?
  • Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for who You are.  Thank You for your goodness and faithfulness in the highs and lows of life!  Help me remember that I can trust you and surrender all control to you. In Jesus name, amen.
