What is love?

Author: Ty Park
Jun 20, 2023 | Romans 5

Begin with 2 minutes of silence and stillness before God.

Dear Heavenly Father, We are quiet before you today. We come before you only to spend time and grow in our knowledge of you.

Que the music: "What is Love? Baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more."

Now, that the early 90’s song is stuck in your head. Let’s answer the question - what actually is love? Love is way more than a feeling; love has been described as a choice! It’s an action. The ultimate form of love is the love that we see God demonstrating for us.

Paul in Romans 5:8 says this, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

This is the beauty of the Gospel, we do not deserve a chance to be in a relationship with Christ. Yet while we were still broken sinful people, God still loved us so much that He sent His only son, Jesus, to take on our sins so we could have a relationship with the Father! God chose us! We have nothing to offer Him, we can't earn His love. There is nothing we could do to make Him love us anymore and there is nothing we can do to make Christ love us any less. That’s called unconditional love.

There is no greater love than the love that Christ has for us! It says in His Word in John 13:34-35, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”

Once we experience this kind of love we are able to strive to love other people the way Christ first loved us.

Take 2 minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
  • In what ways have you experienced God’s love?
  • In what way can you demonstrate God’s love to someone else today?

Family Devos: Romans 5

Head

Today, we are going to look at an exciting part of the Bible that tells us about the amazing love and peace we can have through Jesus Christ. In Romans 5, the author, Paul, tells us that because of our faith in Jesus, we have been made right with God. You may be wondering what that means. Can you think of a time when you didn’t make the best choices and got something taken away as a result? We all have had struggles and probably have faced consequences for those poor choices, but here, Paul assures us that no matter what we do, God will always love us!

Heart

We are no longer separated from Him because of our mistakes. Instead, we can have peace, hope, forgiveness, and the Holy Spirit's love in our lives. Isn’t God's love amazing?! He is always with us, guiding and supporting us.

Hands

Prayer: Thank you for being my loving and caring Father. Today, I am reminded of Your incredible love for me. You sent Jesus to give me eternal life. I am so grateful for Your amazing grace. When things are tough, give me the strength to keep going and to rely on You. Thank You, Lord, for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Help me to never take it for granted. In Jesus' name, Amen.
