Head

The Bible teaches us so much! It even teaches us how to speak and respond. Proverbs 15:1-4 offers a profound insight into the power of our words with descriptions as “life-giving” or “life-crushing”.

There is a famous professional fighter, Mr. T, who made trash-talking famous. He would get into his opponents' heads with his words. Just words! His words were used as weapons. It is amazing to think that words hold this kind of power.
Now, let’s also look at words that bring life. This passage teaches us that a gentle response can turn away anger, while harsh words can stir up anger. Our words can bring life and healing or harm and destruction.

Heart

As we reflect on this scripture, let’s consider our own lives and relationships.

  • How often do we respond gently when we disagree with someone?
  • Has anyone ever said something to you that hurt you deeply?
  • Or has anyone shared words that made you feel really good?

We can all agree that we should pay more attention to our words and how they could affect those around us.

Hands

Now that we understand the importance of our words and have thought about how they make others feel, let’s think about how to apply this scripture in our daily lives. Are there certain people you don’t always talk kindly to? As a family, commit to speaking gently to one another, especially during disagreements or stressful moments. When disagreements arise, take a moment to pause and pray for wisdom before responding. Remember, our actions should reflect our commitment to live out the teachings of Proverbs 15:1-4.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, help us to remember the power of our words and to choose them carefully. May our family reflect Your grace and love in all we say and do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
