Head: Know God's Word | Heart: Love God | Hands: Follow God's Way
Read Matthew 6:19-24
Head
Our passage today talks about our treasures. Did you know there are worldly treasures and Heavenly treasures? Worldly treasures are those things that can be stolen or destroyed. Money is where my mind always goes when I think of treasure, but it’s so many other things…the newest toy, the biggest house, the nicest car, etc. These treasures don’t bring you lasting joy. We think money and having the best of everything will bring us happiness, but God’s Word tells us that our loyalty to Him brings us an everlasting joy that worldly treasures can’t. When those worldly treasures fade away, we are left with nothing but unhappiness unless our heart is devoted to Jesus and the Heavenly treasures He has for us!
Heart
Think about how excited you get when you get a birthday card full of money! It’s SO exciting to get to buy whatever you want. Now let’s think about how you feel when you spend ALL the birthday money. It’s pretty disappointing, right? The joy you had is gone! Sure, you have new things, but when those break or you get tired of them, you lose your joy again. Sometimes, our hearts get so focused on all this material stuff that they aren’t focused on our Savior. I’m not saying material stuff is bad, but when we are so focused on what we have on earth that we forget to point others to Jesus, we will never be happy.
Hands
So, how do we store up our treasures in Heaven? Well, we start by living for Jesus and by doing good works that point others to Him. Turn your heart towards what you can do for Jesus, not what He can do for you. If you struggle with this, ask God to help you! The end of the passage says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Spend time really contemplating where your heart is. Is it on earthly treasures or those treasures that will last for all eternity?
Prayer: God, turn our hearts to You! Help us to love You with everything in us and give us the desire to point everyone we meet towards You! Amen.
