Reframe Rest

Matthew 5:13-16 NIV

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.“ You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Hurry Sickness - the continuous struggle to participate in more and more events in less and less time.

Mark 1:35 NIV

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

Reframe Rest

I. Change WHY you rest.

Genesis 2:2-3 NIV

By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Rest is a practice.

Sabbath means STOP.

The WHY behind resting:
  1. To stop striving
  2. To trust God.

Psalms 46:10 NIV

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

80% of loving others well starts with being well-rested.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is to stop and take a nap.

Reframe Rest

I. Change WHY you rest.

II. Change WHEN you rest.

Rest is a weapon.

Hebrews 4:1 NIV

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.

Restfulness is Margin over Busyness:
  • Quiet over Loud
  • Alone over Crowd
  • Enjoyment over Envy
  • Gratitude over Greed
  • Slow over Hurry
  • Deep over Shallow
  • Delight over Distraction
  • Trust over Anxiety

Reframe Rest

I. Change WHY you rest.

II. Change WHEN you rest.

III. Change HOW you rest.

Matthew 11:28 NIV

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

There is no such thing as intimacy without intentionality.

Practical Ways to Rest:
  1. Take time off your phone.
  2. Take time to give thanks.
  3. Take time to praise.
  4. Take time to read His Word.
  5. Take time to eat.
  6. Take time to sleep.
  7. Take time to go on a walk.
  8. Take time to reflect.
  9. Take time with friends.
  10. Take time alone.

WWJD – What would Jesus do?

He would rest in His Father’s love, grace, mercy, comfort, compassion, wisdom, and strength – not just when He needed it – but as a way of life.
