8 | Extra Credit: Adopted Heirs

"Free" | September Message Series on the Book of Galatians

Every one of us is searching for freedom in some way - freedom from burdens, shame, guilt, and expectations of others. Lots of things in our lives make promises to give freedom, but the problem is that they can’t deliver on those promises. Jesus came to give us true freedom, and He always delivers on all of His promises. Through this September series in the Book of Galatians, we’re learning how to avoid the trap of the world and the enemy that leads to bondage and seeking to understand what true freedom looks like through Jesus alone.

Season 2 Episode 8 of Unschooled and Ordinary discusses the Book of Galatians and adoption into the family of God with special guests, Jeff and Nichole McCardle.

Scripture

Primary Text: Galatians 3:23-4:9

Observation & Application

Read Galatians 3:23-4:9

1. How does Galatians 3:28 describe the unity we have in Christ?

2. What does it mean to be adopted into God's family, as mentioned in Galatians 4:5-7?

3. According to Galatians 3:23-25, what was the purpose of the Law before faith in Christ was made possible through Jesus?

4. Reflect on Galatians 4:8-9: What is the significance of turning back to “weak and miserable forces” after knowing God?

5. As heirs of God’s promise, what responsibilities do we have in reflecting God’s character to the world?

Prayer

God, thank You that through our relationship with Jesus, our identity is in You as Your son or daughter, that we are heirs of Your promise. Lord, help us to be rooted in our identity in You. Amen.

Key Word

The Law: God gave the Law to help His people realize they were sinful and imperfect and therefore needed a Savior - Jesus. When Jesus came to rescue us from sin and death, we no longer needed the Law. Even today, some try to create rules to dictate a relationship with God.
