A Blessed People

Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.

I do not want to disappoint anyone or hurt any feelings, but at no point does God promise His followers riches and prosperity if we follow Him. People sometimes use verses like Philippians 4:13 to imply that we could gain wealth and maybe even a life of ease if we simply follow Jesus. But as we can see with the faithful followers of Christ, the disciples, living a life for Christ does not mean guaranteed earthly wealth. If we look at Philippians 4:12, we see what Paul was trying to say. “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” That’s awesome! In other words, if we follow Christ’s will for our life, we will experience His goodness and peace in our life! That does not necessarily mean wealth or “cool” stuff. It is actually way better than that.

In Isaiah 61:7-9, we see more great news. Two statements stand out. “For I, the Lord, love justice. I hate robbery and wrongdoing.” All of us have sinned but God does not like wrongdoing and will bless those who live as He taught us. He also says, “In my faithfulness, I will reward my people…All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed.” This gives me peace and excitement in God’s goodness. As Christ followers, we should look different from this world and God says He will bless us. We are not guaranteed earthly wealth, but we are promised eternity with the Father, which is a far greater reward. Live a life for Him and we will experience a blessed life that exceeds our plans and expectations.

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
  • Make a list of all of the things that God has blessed you with that aren't material or tangible.
  • Think about all that God has brought you from. How do you view the actions of God in your life after reading Isaiah 61:7-9?
  • Pray today that God will lead you away from wrongdoing and bless you by giving you the strength to pursue a daily life lived for Him.
