Advent: Mary's Song

Welcome back to our special Advent edition of the Daily Devos. Advent means “the arrival.” It is a way to look back and celebrate the Son of God coming to earth to be born as a baby in a manger while we also look forward to His second coming when creation will be redeemed and restored. Through December, we invite you to experience Advent in your own story.

Each week, we will discover a theme or a promise seen in the birth of Jesus that carries us through the “already not yet” as we await the arrival of His eternal Kingdom. This week we are looking at the promise of JOY.

Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.

The heading in my Bible for this passage reads, "The Magnificat: Mary's Song of Praise." If you missed yesterday's passage, Luke 1:39-45, go back and check it out. I’ll wait... Alright, let’s roll.

The Holy Spirit has just spoken through Elizabeth to encourage Mary. Mary has borrowed some faith from Elizabeth. Clearly, Mary was impacted by this encounter, because her response is praise to God, hence the title of this passage, Mary’s Song of Praise.

Mary’s song glorified God for what he was going to do. I underlined in my Bible this line, “From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the mighty one has done great things for me – Holy is His name.”

Mary is not being proud here; she is recognizing and accepting the gift that God has given her. Pride is refusing to accept God’s gifts or taking credit for what God has done; humility is accepting the gifts and using them to praise and serve God. How often - in the name of humility - do we deny, belittle, or ignore our gifts? Instead, we should thank God for them and use them to His glory!

When reading this passage, I also circled verse 56. It stood out to me, and I love how it is almost a drive-by, but don’t miss it.

“Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.”

Elizabeth, old in age and unable to conceive, was pregnant with John the Baptist. Mary, A teenage girl, unmarried, and a virgin. Pregnant with the Savior of the world. That is a lot to process.

Sometimes we have to borrow each other's faith!

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
