Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.
As we wrap up this week’s journey into generosity, Jesus brings us to the heart of what holds so many of us back: Worry. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus invites us to let go of our anxieties about tomorrow and to trust that God has everything in hand: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”
You know, it’s one thing to talk about generosity in theory, but it becomes real when we’re called to actually trust God in practical ways—like with our daily needs. Jesus points us to the birds and the flowers, everyday reminders that God is deeply involved in His creation. “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Jesus isn’t saying we shouldn’t work or plan; He’s inviting us to stop letting worry dominate our hearts. Because when we let go of worry, we make room for generosity.
I don’t know about you, but I can relate to the pull of worry. Sometimes I find myself thinking, “If I just had a little more saved up, if I just had that one problem solved, then I could give freely.” But Jesus is showing us that a life of true generosity begins with trusting Him fully. When we know that God is our provider, we can give without fear because we know He’s “working all things together for the good of those who love Him” (Romans 8:28).
This kind of trust is freeing. Jesus says, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Worry may not add anything to our lives, but it sure can take away. It takes our focus, our joy, and our peace. But when we seek God’s Kingdom first, when we let go of trying to control everything, we’re free to live generously. Our lives become a testimony of faith, showing the world that we serve a God who meets our every need.
Jesus closes this passage with a reminder that brings it all together: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” Generosity isn’t about having “enough” to give; it’s about seeking God’s Kingdom above everything else. When our focus is on Him, He promises to take care of the rest. We don’t have to hoard or cling tightly to what we have. Instead, we can live with open hands, confident that God will provide for today and for every tomorrow.
As we finish this week, let’s ask God to release us from the grip of worry. Let’s commit to living generously, free from the fear of scarcity. Because here’s the reality: with God we are enough, we have enough, and we can give enough.
Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
- What are the main worries that keep me from being generous, and how can I trust God with these areas of my life?
- How does knowing that God provides for the birds and flowers help me release my need to control or cling to my resources?
- What does “seeking first His Kingdom” look like in my daily life? How can I let this mindset shape my approach to generosity?
- Prayer: Father, thank You for being my provider and for reminding me that I don’t need to carry the weight of worry. Help me to seek Your Kingdom above all else and to trust You with my needs. Free me from fear and teach me to live with open hands. May my life reflect Your faithfulness and a testament to the peace that comes from trusting in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
